Ed Dillard: Opening Up

Every resident at The Encore on 7th knows Ed. In fact, he makes sure you do. Edward J. Dillard has served as the concierge at the Encore on 7th for the past 10 years and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

When you ask Ed about his title, he balks at the term “concierge.” He prefers doorman. This might be because Ed has worked as a doorman for over 40 years, but it’s probably because he’s a straight shooter who just likes to connect with his residents.

“I like meeting people. I call everybody by their first name the majority of the time,” he notes.

Ed’s familiarity with residents is rooted in his passion for making The Encore on 7th as welcoming a place as possible. “This is where I work, but for the residents, this is their home. I want them to feel at home every time they walk through the door.”

Ed continues, “You know, everybody has problems and I just want people to be glad when they walk through that door that there’s somebody there to greet them. I enjoy that. I’ve met a lot of people that way. I just enjoy people. I enjoy talking to them, making them laugh if I can make them laugh. Just greeting them when they come walking through the door.”

Ed takes his duties very seriously and has become a staple of hospitality at The Encore on 7th. Whether it’s holding the door open for returning residents, giving tours to folks who are new to the building, or simply going the extra mile to ensure every single resident feels at home, Ed is the man.

“I’d do anything for anyone in here. Monday and Tuesday are my normal days off, but once, one of our residents said, ‘hey can you do me a favor? I have an affair going on up in the lounge. Could you come in between 5:30 and 7:30?’ I said I don’t mind. I’m 77 years old, what do I have to worry about? I enjoy the people here. I really do. We have a great staff and it’s a great building in Downtown Pittsburgh.”

Although he’s modest, Ed stands behind his work. It’s this devotion that makes him one of The Encore on 7th’s best attributes, and we know it!

In addition to all of his formal responsibilities, Ed serves another, equally important role. He is an ambassador for Downtown Pittsburgh. Ed has lived in Pittsburgh his entire life, growing up in the North Hills. Before coming to the Encore on 7th, he worked at iconic buildings like the US Steel Tower. Over the past seven decades, Ed has witnessed firsthand the myriad changes Pittsburgh has undergone.

“When I was a lot younger, Downtown was a lot different. There were more stores. Sometimes I used to go shopping around Christmastime, but I got away from that because you couldn’t move Downtown! You had to walk out in the streets to get around because people would stop right in front of you to look in store windows. I’d like to see Downtown revitalize itself with more shopping.”

Ed maintains a positive outlook. Although these shopping “glory days” of Downtown Pittsburgh have passed, Ed knows the city is on a major upswing. He’s excited to see people moving back Downtown and all of the new restaurants opening. He hopes this trend continues with more shops returning to the area. Ed knows just how special Downtown Pittsburgh is, and he’s rooting for it.

Speaking of rooting, Ed’s favorite thing to do (besides manning the door at The Encore on 7th) is to cheer on his beloved Pittsburgh sports teams—Steelers, Pirates, or Penguins, it doesn’t matter. Ed is proud of his city. In his lifetime, he’s seen, 6 Super Bowl victories, 3 World Series championships, and 4 Stanley Cups. He’s even had the pleasure of meeting a number of Pittsburgh athletes who have called The Encore on 7th home, adding he knows the Pirates are going the achieve greatness because they’re such “good young men.”

Ed’s unconditional devotion to The Encore’s residents is not without its rewards. He explains that one his greatest joys is when he’s walking down the street and one of his residents says hello, maybe introducing him to their friends. “That’s how you know they’re a good person,” he muses, adding that everyone at The Encore on 7th is a good person. It’s a job he enjoys and wants to continue doing as long as possible.

As Downtown Pittsburgh continues to evolve, changing for the better, Ed Dillard remains a constant reminder of the city’s past and the right way to do things. Just like one of our city’s countless bridges, Ed ushers his residents back home. His devotion to The Encore on 7th and Pittsburgh in general is manifested every time he opens that door, every time he greets a resident, or whenever he goes that extra mile to ensure they have the best home in the city.

Ed concludes with this thought: “When I first started here, they asked me what my goal was. I said, to make The Encore on 7th the best highrise in the city of Pittsburgh. We won four awards last year. Every year they evaluate highrise and garden-style apartment and we won four awards—every category we could win. The staff are nice, we get along. That’s the main thing. We’re all here for one goal: to make the residents want to stay here.”

How to Spend a Quiet Weekend Around the Cultural District

While there’s so much going on in downtown Pittsburgh, it’s understandable to want a quiet night or weekend every once in awhile. However, just because you’re not going to a special event doesn’t mean there’s not loads to do around Downtown and the Cultural District. Keep reading for a few of our favorite things to do on a lazy Saturday or Sunday, all within walking distance from The Encore on 7th!

Amazing Books

Whether you’re into James Joyce or J.K. Rowling, this is a must for anyone living in Downtown Pittsburgh. Located on Liberty Ave. between 7th Ave. and Smithfield St., the aptly named Amazing Books is just that! It’s easy to get lost for hours, combing through shelf after shelf of books spanning countless genres. In addition to classics and well known authors, you’ll be sure to discover so obscure, yet captivating titles. Be sure to check out the extensive collection of rare and first editions. You never know what you might find!

But it’s not just books that makes this independently owned shop so amazing. If you’re an audiophile, you’ll love the vast collection of records just waiting for you to flip through them. Found something you’d like to hear? No problem! They’ll let you listen to the record right in the store.

National Aviary

Just a 15 minute walk across the Roberto Clemente bridge to the Northside will land you at one of Pittsburgh’s greatest treasures. The National Aviary is home to some of the most exotic species on the planet, complete with condors, South African penguins, and even an adorable, baby three-toed sloth! While this might not be the quietest option in this entry, it’s certainly the most beautiful. Walk from room to room where birds fly freely. In addition to the natural beauty of the birds and habitats, the National Aviary hosts some pretty cool events including daily feedings, penguin painting, and an Aviary VIP experience which gets you behind-the-scenes access to this amazing zoo.

Gasoline Street Coffee Company

If you love coffee, but hate the crowds at big chains, we’ve got the place for you. New to Downtown Pittsburgh, Gasoline Street Coffee is the perfect place for a relaxing Saturday. Whether hanging out with friends or catching up on a good book, this is a coffee shop you won’t want to miss. Nestled under a bridge along 1st Ave, close to the T station and a short walk from The Encore on 7th, Gasoline Street’s blend of modern and industrial decor will transport you to Pittsburgh’s manufacturing hay day--without any of the smog!

The coffee’s amazing, too! Gasoline Street roasts and brews all of its own beverages, using locally sourced materials. They’re famous for their Catalytic Cold Brew which comes in stylish, retro bottle you’ll want to display long after your visit. Better yet, bring your own container to save a few bucks.

Just because you want to take it easy this weekend doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice a fun day off. Visiting these great spots in and around the Cultural District will help you get the most out of living at The Encore on 7th while still recharging your batteries for the busy week ahead.

Do you have a favorite Downtown spot for relaxing? Let us know about it in the comments!

This Weekend in Pittsburgh

Image from Pixabay
Pittsburgh is always busy during the weekends. This is why we love living downtown at The Encore on 7th. This weekend is no exception. We have the Steelers, Oktoberfest events and more all making this weekend a busy one for the city. What is on your itinerary the next few days? Keep reading to see what is going on around your home for this second weekend in September.

Friday

Channel your inner child at the Carnegie Science Center 21+ Night. The theme this month is “Back to School”. Grab a backpack and take your first day photos because this night will be a flashback to kindergarten. Once you get your back-to-school photo taken, you can head to the computers to play Oregon Trail and other classic computer games! Then, the Science Lab is home to your favorite elementary school experiments complete with  baking soda volcanoes and more. There is also a cash bar and music performances throughout the night. The 21+ night starts at 6pm and ends at 10pm.

Saturday

Travel back even further in time at the Pittsburgh Renaissance Fair. This one is about a 40 minute drive from The Encore on 7th, but it is worth every minute. You can enjoy jousting, medieval fighting and hilarious shows with the price of admission. Get there early at 10am so you do not miss one of the shows that perform at various times throughout the day. We recommend the German Brothers and the Washing Ladies. There is also great food and beer for you to enjoy throughout your day. Insider's Tip: Make sure to bring cash to tip the performers after each show.

Sunday

Sunday means one thing in Pittsburgh: football! The Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cincinnati Bengals at the first home game of the season. The game starts at 1pm with game festivities starting before. Will you be walking over to the North Shore to pre-game before the Steelers take on one of their biggest rivals?  This rivalry goes back to the days of Chuck Noll. Coach Noll would hate going to the Bengals stadium because they would always mess up the Steelers introductions. However, this is just one small aspect of the rivalry that has only intensified over the years.

These events are going to keep you busy this weekend. Whether you are cheering “Here We Go” or “Hear ye hear ye”, we hope you have a great weekend in the golden triangle.

Summer Is Not Over Yet In Pittsburgh

Summer is not over yet in Pittsburgh! School may have started, but that does not mean you have to stop enjoying the gorgeous weather. Pittsburgh has great events scheduled throughout September. From the Northside to the Cultural District, you can find something for everyone’s tastes by looking at the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership Calendar. We have featured some great September events that we are marking on our calendars this month. Keep reading and find out what you can add to your itinerary this September.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are still in a fight for the last wildcard spot this month. They will feature a great series over the next two days against the Cincinnati Reds. This division matchup could help us move ahead in the wildcard standings. You can also check out the Pittsburgh Pirates website for a complete list of games and giveaways for the month of September.

On Wednesday, September 14th, there will be a Downtown Rooftop Shindig at the Theatre Square garage. This monthly event is sponsored by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. This will be the last shindig of the season and will feature the movie Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. This event is also a short walk from your home at The Encore on 7th.

If you want an event that will get you up and moving, make sure to register for the Pittsburgh Great Race. This annual race will be held on Sunday, September 25th this year. This event includes a 10k, 5k, fitness walk and the Junior Great Race. The Great Race is also a “green event”. Compostable cups at the water stops and an online virtual race bag are all examples of how the Great Race is committed to staying green.

Finally, if you want to explore the cultural district, make sure to get your tickets to Kinky Boots. This Tony-Award winning Broadway musical is coming to the Benedum Center on September 20th-25th. The original cast also has a Pittsburgh connection. Pittsburgh-native Billy Porter won a Tony for playing the lead role of Lola. You can purchase tickets or find out more about the show at the Cultural Trust website.

What other events do you know about in the Pittsburgh area this month? You can share your favorites by posting on our Facebook Page. We hope you have a great last few weeks of summer!

Ribfest 2016 is back on the North Shore this weekend.

Image From Pixabay
As we’re sure you know, Pittsburgh has many great events throughout the year. But this weekend features events you surely don’t want to miss. It is finally “kickoff” weekend at Heinz Field, which means food, music and sports for four days straight. In addition to that, you can check out Ribfest, an annual tradition in the city that brings “Pittsburghers” from all over the area to try some of the best ribs in the country. This weekend is even the kickoff for the Pitt Panthers’ season at Heinz Field. Come celebrate your Labor Day weekend on the North Shore with these great traditions.

One of the biggest perks of living at The Encore on 7th is your proximity to the North Shore events. You do not need to worry about finding an Uber or taking the T when you can simply walk across the Clemente Bridge. And this will be wonderful for all the late night concerts that occur during Ribfest. The Clarks will perform on Friday, September 2nd and Chris Jamison will perform on Saturday, September 3rd, both beginning at 9pm. Make sure to check out the schedule to see all of the great performers scheduled to hit the stage this weekend.

Now that you know which performers you want to see, it is time to decide which ribs you will try. Ribfest in Pittsburgh is known to have a selection of award winning ribs from around the country. Carolina Rib King and Pigfoot are just two of the top notch vendors with must-try ribs. Once you taste these ribs, you will be coming back for more, year after year.

If all of these events are not enough, you also have the opportunity to cheer on your Pittsburgh Panthers at their home opener. The Panthers will play against Villanova on Saturday at 1:30pm. This gives you the perfect opportunity to visit the North Side all day and enjoy many of these exciting events.

The Encore on 7th is lucky enough to have the North Shore in our backyard. Take a walk across the bridge this weekend and enjoy Ribfest 2016 before it ends on Sunday! We hope you have a happy and safe Labor Day weekend!

Enjoy The End of Summer

Image From Pixabay
Summer is coming to an end, but that does not mean you have to pack up the shorts and flip flops just yet. Pittsburgh has so many great outdoor events over the next few weeks, that you can squeeze every last drop out of summer 2016. We are also lucky enough to have the Pirates and Steelers to cheer for on the North Shore right across from The Encore on 7th. Check out just a few of the great events occurring in Pittsburgh at the end of summer.

Rib Fest
The Fib Festival is an annual tradition as part of opening weekend at Heinz Field. You have free admission to the best ribs in the country, world class entertainment, fun activities for children and more. This Pittsburgh tradition runs September 1st-September 5th. This is also the same weekend as the Pitt Home Opener.

Pittsburgh Restaurant Week features various restaurants around the golden triangle hosting unique specials from August 15th-21st. These restaurants are in the city and in the surrounding suburbs. Make sure to call for reservations ahead of time because the restaurants do fill up fast.

This Pittsburgh tradition in West Newton, PA, spans six weekends from August 19th-September 25th. You can watch performances, shop artisans and taste delicious food throughout their six themed weekends. This event is good for adults and children of all ages. You can purchase tickets and learn more about the themed weekends by checking out their website.

These are just a few of the great events around Pittsburgh in the next few weeks. Make sure to take some time to explore our city and discover something new in the last few weeks of summer.

What To Watch In Rio?

Image From Pixabay
The Rio Olympics are here, and we are ready to cheer on Team USA for the next two weeks. There are plenty of amazing athletes and events to watch starting tonight. We also have the opportunity to watch great Pittsburgh athletes compete for our nation. Whether you are watching from your couch at The Encore on 7th or from a local bar, here are a few recommendations for events to look out for this Olympics.

Opening Ceremonies

The opening ceremonies are tonight at 8:00. The show will be on a tape delay so they can curate footage and insert commentary into the broadcast. NBC will air the opening ceremonies and all other Olympic events throughout the next two weeks. The Brazilian film director Fernando Meirelles created this year's ceremonies and only spent 10% of the budget compared to the 2012 London Olympic games. However, that does not mean it will not be the event to watch of the weekend.

Women's Gymnastics

Two former Olympians lead this group of five girls that have become the definition of "squad goals". They are looking to grab another team gold medal along with five other gold medals up for grabs. Simone Biles the 19 year old gymnastics phenom will be who to watch. Her start value and difficulty is so above the other girls that it is almost impossible for her not to win. The US Team has won every world championship since London, so they are favored in this year's competition. The qualifications for women's gymnastics start on Sunday. Then, the team final will be on Wednesday with individual events to follow.

Swimming

The US has always been a powerhouse in the swimming competition. This year one of the most decorated Olympians in history, Michael Phelps, will be back again to compete for his titles. He is just one of the many swimmers to watch. Katie Ledecky was one of the youngest members of the delegation in 2012 and came home with a gold medal. She is back with even more experience and she is hoping to add some more hardware to her collection. The swimming competitions are held throughout the two-week Olympic run, so make sure to check your schedules to see when each race is held.

These are just a few of the great events we are looking forward to watching this year. You can find out when every sport is broadcast and on what network by checking out the NBC Olympics webpage.

Summer in Pittsburgh

Image From Pixabay
You are only half way through summer, and that means there is plenty of time to enjoy some great events throughout the Pittsburgh area. Picnics, movies, BBQ’s and more are all within a short distance from your home at The Encore on 7th.

During the summer, we love to head to the park and have a picnic. It is the perfect time to get out of your home and enjoy time with friends. All you have to do is pack your blanket, basket and sandwiches and head a few blocks to the nearest outdoor space. The North Shore is only a short walk away from The Encore on 7th. This is the perfect place to set up a picnic for an afternoon in the summer heat.

You can also head to a game at PNC Park. Living at The Encore on 7th gives you the added advantage of not having to worry about parking for Pirates games. You can walk across the Clemente bridge and be ready for the Bucco's action. There are still a few great months of baseball left. You can head to the Pirates website to find tickets for the game you want to see.

If you want more of a low energy summer event, do not forget about the outdoor movies all around Pittsburgh. There are various spaces that show outdoor movies throughout the summer. You can join a few friends for one of the Rooftop Shindigs in the cultural district. On August 3rd, travel back to the 80's with Ferris Bueller's Day Off. There are also other parks and drive-in theaters that show movies all summer long.

These are just a few of the many events that you can attend this summer in Pittsburgh. Do you have other events that are already on your calendar? Let us know on our Facebook Page. We hope you have a great summer with friends and family.

Fire Safety Pet Day

Image From Pixabay
Imagine this: you’re out to dinner, enjoying a lovely meal with a friend and having a great time catching up. Your phone rings. It’s the fire department calling to inform you that your apartment caught fire while you were out. Your first thought? Your pets at home, of course! The thought of your beloved animals stuck in a home as a fire breaks out is terrifying.

Fires while you’re away can be prevented. In honor of Pet Fire Safety Day this Friday, we wanted to share with you some ways that you can stop these kind of accidents in their tracks. Not only will you keep your pets safe but your neighbors and your neighbors’ pets too.

Extinguish Candles

This one might seem pretty obvious but if you’re a fan of vegging out on the couch with a steaming cup of coffee, a good book, and some scented candles, don’t forget to put them out once you’re done with them. Animals can be attracted to the flames and hop up to see what’s going on and in one fell swoop of a paw or tail, the candle is on the carpet.

Go Flameless

Instead of real candles, opt for flameless candles. Or if you’re more interested in the scent than the flame, find some scent diffuser sticks. They come in a variety of different scents and tend to last a long time. They’re much safer than candles but your pets could still be attracted to the sticks poking up from your table so keep them in a high spot so they don’t get knocked down.

Mind the Knobs

It’s also possible for your playful cat or clumsy dog to turn on a stove knob by accident. If you find your pets doing this often, the best course of action is to remove stove knobs when you’re not at home. It might seem tedious but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Also, make sure your stove knobs are turned off once you’ve finished cooking. It could save your pet!

Box Up The Babies

Young pets are much more likely to get into things than older, wiser pets. Keep your young ones in a crate while you’re out of the house. It will keep them out of trouble and in the event a fire does break out, it will be much easier for the fire department to locate and evacuate them from the apartment.

Make Your Pets Known

In the event of a fire in your home while you’re away, there might not be anyone there to tell the fire department that you have animals staying there. Order yourself some stickers to place on the front door to make it known that you have pets that are still in the home. You can get them from the ASPCA website here.

Accidents happen. Hopefully, with proper precautionary measures, they don’t have to happen to you. Keep your pets safe and sound in your  The Encore on 7th apartment by following these tips.

Beat the Heat

Image From Pixabay
It is very hot out this July. We are always looking for ways to beat the heat throughout the summer. Pools, A/C and ice cream are just a few ways that come to mind. However, for the adults that want to get out with friends. We can think of one method that is perfect for after work hours: Cocktails! We have found some great cocktails that will help you beat this heat.

The lemon basil vodka gimlet is perfect for those who love the taste of lemonade in the heat. The recipe takes granulated sugar, water, basil, vodka, basil simple syrup and lemon juice. You have to prepare the syrup 30 minutes in advance on the stove. After this, you can continue the recipe and and serve the drink on the rocks. Learn more about this delicious summer drink here.

If you want to head out somewhere after work, head to Olive or Twist, just down the road from The Encore on 7th.  We love to cool off with one of their signature martinis. The "Lavender Lemon Drop" has all the tastes of summer. It contains Absolut Hibiskus, Creme de Violette and Lemon. We usually pair it with one of their delicious appetizers for the perfect after work happy hour.

If you are into a patriotic summer, you can cool off with the American Cherry Mojito. This easy recipe consists of cherry limeade, white rum, mint leaves, cherries and lime slices. First you must muddle together the mint and cherries until they are lightly smashed. Then, in another container mix the rum and and Cherry Limeade Sparking ICE over ice. Finally, combine both over ice and garnish to taste. You can find the recipe here.

These are just a few of the delicious drinks to help you beat the heat. You can find more drinks at Fox News. We hope you have a great summer with these refreshing drinks. What is your favorite summer drink? You can comment on our Facebook page with yours!

Father's Day Ideas

Image From Pixabay
Father’s Day is this Sunday. We know that finding a gift for Dad can be challenging. If your Dad is the person that has every car part or tool known to man; you might be at a loss for what to get him each year. However, we have some ideas that every Dad will love. Keep reading and get your Father’s Day shopping done early this year. We hope Sunday is a nice and relaxing day for you and your Dad.

Is Your Dad a few hundred miles away? This can make the gift challenge harder. You won’t be able to take your Dad somewhere, and you won’t know what he has in the house. This can severely limit your gift options. However, there is a gift for every long-distance Dad. The Amazon Fire Quad 8GB Tablet is only 39.99. This tablet has everything your Dad needs. It even comes loaded with over $20,000 dollars in apps, games and in-app bonuses. This is the perfect gift to send to Dad when you cannot be there in person.

If your Dad will be with you this year, maybe the gift can be an experience. Pittsburgh has plenty of wine or beer tour options available. Check out Groupon for some affordable options for you and your dad. These are so close to your home at The Encore on 7th, but they also a great trip for members of your family.

If you are really stuck and do not know your Dad, we recommend calling a relative. You can ask them his favorite places to shop and eat. This will give you an idea of a gift card you can purchase. A gift card with a nice handwritten card is perfect for any Dad.

No matter what you get your Dad. We think he will love knowing that it came from you. What other great ideas do you have for Father’s Day? If you are looking for a few more tips, check out this Father’s Day Quiz at USA Today. Maybe, this will help you find the perfect thing to say I Love You Dad.

Wedding Season Is Here

Image From Pixabay
Wedding Season is here. This means that the invitations are coming to your mailbox so fast that your summer will be booked in no time. Planning, scheduling vacation and finding flights are just a few of the many steps in going to a wedding. We all want to avoid the dreaded wedding “Faux Pas”. Here is our 2016 guide to wedding etiquette.

RSVP

Make sure to RSVP as soon as possible. Even if the invitation says the due date is three months from now, the earlier the better. RSVP's let the wedding planner and couple know how many guests they can expect for food and drinks.

Read the Invitation

Do not go rogue when it comes to instructions and gifts. The invitation was made to answer all of your questions. If there is a registry, make sure to buy off the registry. If there are other specific instructions such as donations or payments for honeymoons, make sure to take those into consideration too. The bride and groom know what they need, and this prevents you from buying them the 8th toaster of the event.

Don’t Show Up Late

Make sure to plan ahead. You live in a great location at The Encore on 7th. so whether you are traveling locally or to the airport you have multiple resources to get to your location on time. Make sure to plan ahead and leave early. You never know how traffic will be during the summer travel months.

These are just a few suggestions we have to make sure you get through wedding season without a glitch. If you are the one getting married, Congratulations! If you are a guest this season, make sure to have fun and enjoy the moment. You can find more information about wedding season at Apartment Therapy.

3 Ways To Enjoy June in the ‘Burgh!

Temperatures are up, the sun is appearing more often…it’s officially June in the Steel City! Even better, as tempting as running off to the beach is this time of year, Pittsburgh has plenty of enjoyable seasonal activities that we can all participate in right here at home. We’re especially looking forward to enjoying the following:
  • The Arts Festival. The locally beloved Three Rivers Arts Festival is just days away - set to run from June 3rd to June 12th. With it comes a great opportunity to browse through incredible local artworks and crafts while listening to fantastic musicians. Not sure if you want to go? Just check out the list of vendors at the Artist Market, or the list of shows and events. We bet you'll find something of interest on there. Even the Pittsburgh Symphony will be taking part in the Festival - and it’s free to browse through and listen to everything there! Just be ready to get out the wallet if you actually want to take some wares home with you.
  • The outdoors. Hey, if the sun is out, it's probably a good idea to take advantage of it while you can in this town! With groups like Venture Outdoors in the city and locations like the Laurel Highlands not too far away, it’s easier than ever to get outside. But hey: even if you’re not up for kayaking or hiking, there’s plenty of things for you to do that will get you out of your normal routine! Outdoor yoga classes, “open streets”, local 5Ks…there really is something for everyone on this list of local activities.
  • The Point (and everything surrounding it!). No summer in Pittsburgh is complete without a walk to the Point. And sunset at the Point is just beautiful. But why stop there? With Station Square and the Gateway Clipper fleet a quick T-ride away, and the Pittsburgh Pirates set to play for weeks to come, there are ample opportunities for you to enjoy classic views of the city - without ever needing to get into a car or invest in hours of travel!
Those are a few of our favorite things about June in Pittsburgh. What about you? Did we include or miss your favorite part of this month in the Steel City? Let us know in the comments!

3 Things To Do During Memorial Day Weekend In Pittsburgh

It’s time to get ready for a long fun holiday weekend! With so many local activities to choose from and hot spots to visit, deciding what to do with friends or family this weekend may feel overwhelming. Not to fear - we’ve chosen a few of our own ideas to help you make this decision! Here are our recommendations for “what to do” during your holiday weekend:
  • Visit the Pittsburgh Zoo. A visit to the zoo is always a blast - but there's an extra special incentive to visit sooner rather than later. Earlier this year the Pittsburgh Zoo welcomed an adorable new addition: an Amur leopard cub! After lots of TLC, this darling baby has begun exploring the outside world, to the delight of zoogoers. She’s out and about in her exhibit from 9am - 11am every day, so as long as you don’t mind waking up a little early, you can start your day with this ball of adorableness!
  • Avoid the heat at a museum. It’s definitely getting hotter outside, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying what our city has to offer! To avoid the worst of the heat during a day out, just head on out to a museum. The four Carnegie Museums always make for a great day out. The Heinz History Center is also a great place to visit, with a special exhibit on historic toys ending this month - and a flag folding ceremony on the 30th, in honor of Memorial Day. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, though, don't worry: Pittsburgh has a plethora of smaller museums as well (including the ToonSeum, which is right in walking distance!)
  • Spend a day at Kennywood. While we can’t promise that you’ll have the park all to yourself, this is definitely a good weekend to head to Kennywood. The coasters…the Potato Patch Fries…the newly christened Noah’s Ark ride! It all makes for a classic day off in Pittsburgh, and is a must this summer.
Those are our top picks for a holiday weekend in town. What about you? Let us know what you plan on doing this weekend in the comments!

Get Ready To Plan Your Memorial Day Weekend Party!

The unofficial start of summer is here in T-minus 16 days. For those of you who are staying in town for the holiday, that means you have just over two weeks to get your plans nailed down and your apartment decorated for any holiday parties you may be planning. No worries - with this trusty planning guide, you'll be set to ring in the warm weather and summer vacation season in no time!
  • Plan your menu. Any good holiday requires a little menu planning, and Memorial Day weekend is not exception. You’ll want to figure out what you’ll be serving now so you can purchase ingredients and figure out what you’ll be making when, to avoid last-minute chaos and panic in the kitchen. TasteOfHome.com, FoodNetwork.com, and TheKitchn.com have some great ideas to help you get the planning started!
  • Decorate. Not only do you want to write up your kitchen-related tasks, but there’s also the issue of decorations to consider. Patriotic banners, streamers, tableware, door wreaths, window flower beds with red, white and blue flowers…all of these decoration ideas can up the “Patriotic” feel of your apartment. You’ll definitely want to consider your budget, and your decorating tastes, as you get the place ready for company!
  • Get the games ready. Any good party needs activities! Whether you and your friends are the type to conquer a video game or to share some laughs over a board game, it won’t hurt to figure out what you have on hand and what you want to ask friends to bring to help liven up your party.
Thinking about these three things now will make your party prep run much more smoothly in a couple weeks. Perhaps most importantly, however, will be remembering to take a moment to appreciate the meaning of Memorial Day. As we prepare to enjoy a relaxing start to the summer season, we are thankful for those who sacrificed for our ability to enjoy our lives and time off. Please join us in preparing to salute those who have made this possible later this month.

Thank you, and happy Memorial Day planning.

4 Things To Do On A Rainy Pittsburgh Day

We’ve all been there: we’ve all had to bail on plans to walk along Mount Washington or walk in a local park because of pouring rain. Recognizing that the weather isn’t always going to cooperate is simple a part of being a proud Pittsburgh native. But who says you need to cancel a fun day out entirely due to rain?

While you just want to get out and about in your city, or you promised to show your visiting company the local sights, there are plenty of other things you can do that are quite enjoyable. Here are just a few of our favorite "Rainy day" backup plans:
  • Visit a museum. Few things can beat a fun museum visit, and there are plenty of museums to choose from in this city! Pittsburgh is home to four different Carnegie Museums, each of which are full of amazing activities and exhibits. And the Heinz History Center is fantastic for history fans, if you're feeling like connecting with the region's past. So our museums have definitely got you and company covered when it comes to a lot of historical or natural sciences topics!
  • Hit up an alternate "museum." Not quite feeling like spending the day in a museum? No worries - there are other great spots you can visit while staying out of the rain. For example, if you're more of a live animal lover, then the Aviary is the place to go. And if you absolutely must surround yourself with greenery to make up for the park walk you're missing out on, Phipps has you covered!
  • Head to Station Square. As a historical site and a shopping center, Station Square is a great "everything in one spot" sort of place to enjoy on a rainy day. Plus, the Gateway Clipper docks in the area - meaning, depending on the weather, you could probably hop on board a boat ride and enjoy unique views of Pittsburgh despite a little rain!
  • Get artsy. If museums or shopping aren't what you're looking for, why not try out some artsty activities? Pittsburgh is home to local Paint Monkey and national franchise Painting With A Twist. Both are BYOB, and both are tons of fun and worth looking into as a way to brighten up a rainy day!
Did we miss your favorite rainy day activity? We want to hear about what you do on overcast days - let us know in the comments!

3 Things To Do To Get Ready For Mother’s Day

Beautiful views can contribute to a bueaitful Mother's Day in Pittsburgh!

Believe it or not, Mother’s Day is barely more than a week away. That means now is the time to get ready and to get those big plans finalized if you’re spending the day with your mother and your family! Fortunately, our Steel City has no shortage of options and resources for making Mother’s Day a good one. So as you’re getting the details finalized and completely your planning checklist, take care to ensure that you don’t miss on these great prep steps:

1) Find the perfect gift. Of course, any Mother’s Day gift should be as personal as possible. Do you know that your mother has been debating replacing something of value in her home? Perhaps a gift card to help cover the expense or even an order to Amazon will be appreciated. Does she prefer to buy local? One of these local gifts and shops may be just the touch you need. Whatever you decide, now is the time to begin thinking about it - otherwise, you may not have your gift delivered or purchased in time!

2) Make those reservations. If you’re planning on spoiling Mom with a meal out, reservations are a must. Lots of places are booking up quickly, and we know for a fact that Phipps’ own Mother’s Day brunch is already sold out! Still, there are plenty of places just waiting for your call. A visit to OpenTable can quickly ensure that you have a table ready on May 8th - and if you need some ideas on where to go, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a great local dining guide!

3) Pick the perfect outing (and photo spot). Need one final thing to bring the family together on Mother’s Day? Deciding on what to do together can make the day complete. An outing to Mount Washington is of course always a delight. Though busy on Mother's Day, Phipps can provide beautiful scenery and sights on even the grayest of days. On the other hand, if the weather is nice, a trip to the zoo might be appreciated. If the weather is really nice, the Gateway Clipper fleet is ready and waiting for you (with a Mother’s Day bunch and lunch of their own, no less!) Or perhaps a trip to the movies is more your mom's style. Whatever you decide, be sure to plan accordingly the day of - the last thing you want is for Pittsburgh traffic to completely ruin your plans!

These three prep steps are great ways to ensure you're ready for Mother's Day. Ultimately, of course, we don't recommend worrying about making the day perfect. Remember: it's the thought and appreciation that counts more than anything. Your time, and your attention, will likely be the best gift of all. Still, it doesn't hurt to finalize those Mother's Day plans now - just to help put the cherry on top of your appreciation!

Find Fresh Produce in Pittsburgh This Spring

Imagine sitting by the river on a cloudless Pittsburgh day. The sun is shining, the warm breeze is blowing through the trees along the Allegheny. What could be better in that moment than a fresh juicy peach? Frankly, that sounds like the perfect afternoon.

Fresh produce is truly a blessing. In Pittsburgh, many of us are lucky enough to live within walking, biking, and driving distance to a grocery store of some kind. During the cold winter months, these stores are all we really have to choose from, but during the spring and summer, you may want to consider trying some of the many local produce outlets the city has to offer.

It’s pretty easy to see why everyone seems to be hopping on the buy-local-bandwagon. Local and organic fruits and vegetables stay fresh for longer, help keep money in the community by supporting small businesses, and simply just taste better most of the time. There are also plenty of ways to get in on this delicious trend right here in Pittsburgh.

Try a Farmers Market

Farmers markets cut out the middleman in the food-buying equation. These markets are typically held outdoors and feature foods sold directly to consumers by the farmers themselves. During the spring and summer, Pittsburgh actually has farmers markets every single day of the week! One of them even moved to a new location downtown at Mellon Park. Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership also sponsors a farmers market in Market Square which begins next month.

Join a CSA

CSA is an acronym for “Community Supported Agriculture.” This is how it works: farmers offer a certain number of “shares” of their crops to the public. Shares typically consist of vegetables and fruits, but sometimes even include dairy, egg, and meat products. Consumers can then purchase shares and receive a weekly box of fresh seasonal produce each week in return. So, it’s basically a magazine subscription, except for food!

The Pittsburgh area offers plenty of CSAs, usually with pick-up locations located all around the city. This is a great way to support the community, keep your home stocked with fresh veggies, and even save money on organic food.

No matter where you get your fruits and vegetables, be sure to enjoy all of the delicious seasonal treats that nature has to offer. Which classic spring and summer dishes are you looking forward to this year?

Burning Bridges Comedy Festival

This weekend, 50 extraordinarily funny people will rise from the depths of Pittsburgh’s smoky bars and greasy pubs. Rants, jokes, and straight up ridiculousness will be on display for all to see on stages across the neighborhoods of Allentown and South Side. In other words, it is time for our city’s very first stand-up comedy festival.

Burning Bridges Comedy Festival begins this weekend, and no matter what happens, it is sure to be a truly unique experience. This two-day event will feature dozens of below-the-radar comics alongside some better-known jokers from New York, Chicago, New Orleans, and Boston.

Pittsburgh’s Standup Comedy Scene
In terms of stand-up comedy in the city, Pittsburgh’s Improv and Pittsburgh Comedy Festival feature mostly mainstream comedians. And while venues like Arcade Comedy Theater and various bars around the city often play host to shows, the local comics in the city don’t have a specific place to call home.

This is one of the reasons that John Dick Winters, the festival’s founder, decided to put together this ambitious project. He is confident that these events will allow local comedians to shine and continue to move Pittsburgh’s stand-up scene forward. “I find that audiences are often pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of the Pittsburgh comedy scene. There's a ton of funny people here, and they deserve more credit than they get.”

Getting In On the Laughs This Weekend
Burning Bridges is a great way to get out and support the small businesses that will serve as venues during the festival, like Black Forge Coffee and Drip Lounge. Their website describes the event as a "Do-It-Yourself" festival with very little influence or contributions. Instead of corporate sponsors, this weekend’s events are presented by Race to the Coffin Comedy and The Epicast Network.

Over the next two days, you’ll be able to find local comedy shows scattered all across Allentown and South Side. These 13 shows include local showcases, those with headliners like Geoff Tate, and also a few more uniquely themed shows, like the Worst Tattoo Competition and even some Comedy Debates.

Getting in on the laughs is also fairly cheap! Most shows are individually priced at around $5 and a pass for the entire festival is only $20. The first show begins Friday, at 8pm! See the entire schedule of shows by clicking here.
